Chase Credit Cards: Change of Rules A.K.A. 5/24

Chase is unveiling a new policy in regards to gaming the credit card system. If you’ve opened more than five new credit card accounts in the past 24 months (hence 5/24), you won’t be approved for any new cards from Chase. Currently this rule only applies to Chase Ultimate Reward earning personal cards (e.g Chase Freedom & Chase Sapphire Preferred. We have made mention in previous posts that Chase will soon be extending their 5/24 rule to co-branded  credit cards (e.g. United, BA, ect) sometime in April.

 Chase Bank Credit Cards

Most people that read this blog apply for a lot more than five cards every two years, so this might be your last chance to grab some Chase cards. I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the Chase application rules & best practices, the current best offers for each Chase credit card and the best current offers overall. If there will be a work around that someone will figure out – that can be possible. However there are no workarounds reported as of yet. This is almost as bad as Amex rule allowing credit cards to be opened only once per cardmember.

Chase Application Rules To The Best Of Our Research

Chase will usually approve a maximum of two new credit cards per month. (Some people got three, but this requires a reconsideration call ). An application January 31 and February 1 is not considered 2 months. You will need to wait the full 30 days.

If you’re not instantly approved for a card, WAIT. If you call reconsideration it’s more then likely that you’ll be denied, based on the 5/24 rule. Although it officially hasn’t gone into effect yet the reps are already implementing it. Our advise, and the advise of many other bloggers is to wait it out.

There is a 24 months period from the time you received the sign up bonus to get it again. This is the 24 from the 5/24 rule.

For most people the best option will be to apply for two credit cards in the same day to get the hard pulls combined (keep in mind that you can either do two business or two personal not a mix of the two). If you are not a churner do what you want. However a word of caution, the Tortoise won the race because he was slow and steady – enough said.

Tortoise wins  the race !

Reinstate Expired United Airline Miles

There is a way to reinstate miles that expired with united airlines. It is actually very simple but not so talked about on the World Wide Web. Follow these simple and easy steps to reinstate your miles.

If you credit and Hertz rental to your UA frequent flyer account number you can get a small mileage credit for your rental. ‎Anyone’s rental can be credited to anyone’s Frequent flyer account. The rental company does not verify if your name matches on the rental and the FF account. (Avis stopped working in November of 2014).

How to do it?

  • You need to call Avis with you Renter Agreement Number.
  • Tell them you want them to credit the miles to your United Account # XX123456
  • Wait for the miles to post
  • Call united and have them reinstate the account as the miles posted were based off a date prior to the date that your miles expired.

The best part about this is the names don’t need to match. If your friend/grandmother or neighbor has a rental before your miles expired you are in luck!

Open a United branded credit card. If you hold any credit card that says United on the front, your miles will not expire so long as the account is open. The United MileagePlus® Explorer Card is the entry level card, with no annual fee the first year, and a $95 fee after that.  It also waives the first checked bag fee.

Enroll in e-miles. This is a program that lets you complete surveys and earn a small number of miles. It offers a 100 point bonus the first time you sign up, and this counts to reset the clock of your mileage expiration.

Shop at one of the MileagePlus® online retail partners. If you’re making a purchase online, go to the United Mileage Plus portal first for a link to your favorite store.  You can earn United miles on the purchases. You don’t need a United credit card to do this. A cheap purchase can be an iTunes song for $0.99.

Enroll in and use MileagePlus® Dining. You can earn miles when using any credit card you link to your account and dining at restaurants in the MileagePlus® dining program. These miles post pretty quicklyusually within a month of the dining purchase.

Donate 500 or more miles to charity. An easy way to reset the clock instantly is to donate miles to charity. You can do it for as little as 500 miles, and you’re doing something good in the process. It’s a great option when you’re almost out of time.

Did these work for you? Let us know in the comments.

Booking A Flight: When Is The Cheapest Day And Time?

Booking a flight can be very tricky as the prices tend to go up and down, but when is the best time to book your flight? The best time to book a flight is 54 days in advance. This is based off a recent study conducted by the folks at CheapAir.com. They have  spent the last year analyzing over four million airline trips. They tracked ticket prices from 320 days before takeoff all the way up until the day before, calculating precisely which day each ticket hit its lowest point.

When is the best time to book?

The best day to book is Saturday or Sunday. The logic is two fold. Firstly the airlines know that leisure travelers are searching those dates, as that’s when they have time to book. The Airlines lower the prices to lure the customers into buying tickets. When Monday comes around and the airline CEO’s are back at work, they make sure to raise the prices back up . After all they just got a bunch of sales from over the weekend.

When Is The Cheapest Days To Fly?

Tuesday. Smack in the middle of the week. In general the less popular days to fly are cheaper. Other  cheap days to fly on U.S. domestic routes are Wednesday and Saturdays. Learn more about this here. The logic is there are the least travels on these days. Airlines still need to accommodate travel, but it is much less popular. The cost of flights on these dates are statistically cheaper.

What Are The Worse Days To Fly?

Popular days will cost more, duh the airlines know how to make money. (Yes,  American Airlines is known for the brilliant, yet simple cost cutting measure they implemented back in 1987. The airline was able to save $70,000 in 1987 by eliminating just one olive from each salad served in first class.) The most popular and most expensive days are usually Fridays and Sundays. These dates are teh most common leisure travel dates. Think about it yourself, when do you want to travel?

Booking a cheap flight can be tricky. You really need to know the dates and times that are the cheapest. If you are flexible try to book your flight 54-59 days in advance. Book for a Tuesday, and book your trip over the weekend to save the most money.

Alternatively you are able to book travel with points. Then the fare is always the same! Jump start you collecting with one of the many credit card offers we have. Check them out on our main page CreditCardJoint.
