Citigroup bans Credit Cards From Sports Betting: Long Live Chase and Amex

Have a Citi credit card or debit card? Don’t bother to try using it to bet on your fantasy sports sites.  Citigroup has barred its New York customers from making credit card transactions with DraftKings and FanDuelJennifer Bombardier a bank spokesperson said, “The ban will last until a decision on the sites’ legality is made by courts”. The sites are in a legal dispute with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who calls them illegal gambling sites. The sites argue that their games are based on skill and therefore legal.

My K9 Web protection also categorized it as GAMBLING.

Luckily, Credit card Joint followers have other credit cards at their disposal. See all our latest cards on our Credit Card page. There are several good American Express and Chase offers that you can apply for.

Costco Strikes Deal With Visa, Citigroup After Dropping AmEx

Costco has reached an agreement with Citi for a new co-branded credit card program, shortly after dropping its similar deal with American Express. The news was picked up by various money sites as well as blogger alike.

Costco turns it’s Back On American Express

Costco (COST) says it will start accepting Visa (V) rather than American Express (AXP) at its U.S. stores on April 1, 2016 the Issaquah, Washington-based retailer said Monday in a statement. New York-based AmEx said Feb. 12 that it will end its exclusive U.S. partnership with Costco next year after the companies failed to reach a deal to renew it. Currently, the wholesale club retailer has accepted only debit cards and Amex cards for purchases in its stores or at its gas stations, although it also accepted Visa and MasterCard for online purchases. American Express has been the only credit card accepted at Costco for the last 15 years

Costco will soon begin to accept Visa credit card cards and effective April 01, 2015 will no longer accept AMEX cards. Note: You won’t have to pay with a Citibank card, any Visa will work.

Costco drops American Express as their exclusive credit card processor and moves onto a deal with VISA (and Citibank).

Charged Forex Fee On Citi AAdvantage Credit Card: Will Reversing The Charge Help?

Foreign Transaction Fee

A Foreign transaction fee is also known as a “FOREX FEE“. Forex fees  are charged by many credit card companies on purchases made in a foreign currency, or on purchases that involve a foreign bank (regardless of whether a foreign currency is used).

Usually, foreign transaction fees are 2.7% (or a similar number) of the amount of each foreign currency purchase, with no minimum or maximum. A while back it was called a currency conversion fee, now it is known as a Forex fee or foreign exchange fee. (Forex is short for Foreign Exchange). Foreign transaction fees are charged by U.S. transaction processors such as American Express, Visa and MasterCard. The card issuing bank may choose to pass that fee along to consumers; most do, and some tack on their own additional fees.

Reader Tamara J submitted this question:

I just made a purchase on my Citi AAdvantage Credit card that DOES NOT waive the Forex Fee, what can I do to waive it?

My novel idea that I wanted to suggest was to reverse the charge. A charge that gets reversed should in logic also reverse the Forex Fee. But I didn’t reply to her until I clarified that it would work. I sent Citi a Secure Message.

Hi, I placed a charge on my card ending in xxxx. The charge was an international charge that had a finance charge of $x.xx. I was wondering if I reversed the charge if the Forex Fee will also be reversed?

The Reply:

Dear Valued Customer,

The foreign transaction fee is a 3% fee billed to an account by Citi. This fee is charged if you make a purchase in a foreign currency that is converted into US dollars.

Please see your Card Agreement for any additional information.

The foreign transaction fee would remain if a merchant credit is returned to the account.

We hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Boom! There went my master plan. I thought I had it all figured out.

My suggestion to the reader is to send a SM to politely request if they can waive the charge. They may be able to accommodate you. If you have a long business relationship with the bank it will also help. Having a card that would waive the annual fee would be the best. You can tell the bank that you wanted to put the charge on the card that has the 0% Forex Fee, but you are human. You made an error. Here is a draft I made that you can try to use in an SM.

I recently placed a charge for $xxx on my credit card account ending in xxxx. The charge was an international charge and I got charged a Forex Fee of $xx. I do have cards that waive the charge, but I got mixed up with the benefits of each card. Can you do me a one time favor of waiving the fee.
I thank you for the consideration and look forward to your reply.
Have a great day,

It doesn’t hurt to try right?

Possible examples of Forex Charges

  • Using your card overseas
  • Buying from a overseas supplier
  • Buying on eBay from a overseas seller
  • A Foreign based company operating in USA might have credit card processing in their home country

Above is a screen shot of a Forex Charge. This account is a Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express. This card DOES NOT waive the Forex fee. The purchase above was from a China based company for $0.92, the Forex fee was $0.02 not to bad.

Does it make sense to have a No Forex fee Card?

If you never travel, or your business does not deal with overseas suppliers there is virtually no need for the “No Forex Fee cards’. The cards that waive the Forex Fee are usually cards that have a annual fee. At a 3% fee, a $100 purchase will cost you $103, not the workd largest fee.

Forex fees are fees accessed by the processing company as an extra charge for foreign purchases. There are credit cards that waive the Foreign Transaction Fees. Forex Fees are usually under 3%.

There are plenty of  Cards that Waive The Fee

Here is a few off the top of my head

British Airways Visa Signature® Card

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

United MileagePlus® Explorer Card

The Platinum Card® from American Express
