Costco Strikes Deal With Visa, Citigroup After Dropping AmEx

Costco has reached an agreement with Citi for a new co-branded credit card program, shortly after dropping its similar deal with American Express. The news was picked up by various money sites as well as blogger alike.

Costco turns it’s Back On American Express

Costco (COST) says it will start accepting Visa (V) rather than American Express (AXP) at its U.S. stores on April 1, 2016 the Issaquah, Washington-based retailer said Monday in a statement. New York-based AmEx said Feb. 12 that it will end its exclusive U.S. partnership with Costco next year after the companies failed to reach a deal to renew it. Currently, the wholesale club retailer has accepted only debit cards and Amex cards for purchases in its stores or at its gas stations, although it also accepted Visa and MasterCard for online purchases. American Express has been the only credit card accepted at Costco for the last 15 years

Costco will soon begin to accept Visa credit card cards and effective April 01, 2015 will no longer accept AMEX cards. Note: You won’t have to pay with a Citibank card, any Visa will work.

REDCARD (TARGET) BlueBird Revised: New Manufactured Spend

Target recently released a new reloadable prepaid card – the REDcard from Target. Since it is similar to the American Express Bluebird, it has also been dubbed the ‘Redbird’ by many bloggers.

The REDcard Target has a number of striking similarities to the American Express for Target – which is one of my favorite tools to hit minimum spend and for Manufactured Spend. However, the American Express for Target card has been unavailable in many Target stores for months now. You HAVE to sign up in a store – you can’t sign up online.

The REDcard Target CAN be loaded with a credit card and you CAN withdraw cash via an ATM.

In order to sign up, you will need to get a temporary card in a physical Target store. Right now the card is only available in these states:

Alabama
Arizona
Colorado
Indiana
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michigan
Mississippi
New Mexico
North Carolina
Ohio
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
Virginia
Wisconsin

How it works

The initial REDcard Target purchase (temporary card) can be loaded with a credit card up to $500 (this will work for your minimum spend already). You can buy this even if you have an existing Bluebird account.

However, you CANNOT sign up for the permanent (full) version of the card if you have an existing Bluebird account. You will need to close your Bluebird account in order to be eligible for a REDcard from Target. Read more about BlueBird here.

Once you have the permanent card, you can reload it with a credit card. There is a high $2,500 limit per day and $5,000 per month. You can withdraw $750 per day but just $2,000/month. Withdrawals at the Target store or with an Allpoint ATM are fee-free.

You can reload your REDcard for Target at any TARGET store, even it it does not sell the card right now. Note that as with most of these products, you cannot reload your card with a Target gift card.

Here is a great review of the different products from Frequent Miler.

HT: Mighty Travels

Target released a new REDcard with American Express. It is very similar to BlueBird. It can have funds loaded via Credit Card making it the newest Manufactured Spend.

$30 American Express Small Business Saturday November, 29 2014

Small Business Saturday is one of the best promotions that American Express runs. If you don’t know what it is, it is equivalent to free money. American Express gives you back $10 for a $10 or more purchase on a eligible American Express card on Saturday 11/9/2014. (Read the full terms below.)

Small Business Saturday Link

This year is better then last year. Last year Amex only gave us a $10 per card. This year the bonus is $10 per card up to 3X (a total of $30 per card). This is even better then a few years back when it was $25 per card. Of late Amex has been offering multiple offers on one card. There was a shop small in Philadelphia, Miami and others this past summer. The offer was $5 3X a total of $15 back per card.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

How to maximize this offer?

Stock up on credit cards. The more cards that you have the more $10’s you can get. Additionally you are able to get the $10 on every AU (Authorized User) that you have.

Where is the offer valid?

It is valid nationwide. There is a list of stores that participate in this promotion See the full list here.

When do I start?

First you will need to sign up your cards. Registration will open 11/16/2014. It may be worthwhile to get this nifty machine if you have a lot of cards. I have a friend that has over 50 cards. If you care to do the math 50 * $30 = $1,500. The more cards that you have the more money you will make.

Terms and Conditions:

  • You’ll receive a $10 statement credit when you make a purchase of $10 or more at a participating small business using an enrolled American Express card on November 29th (Small Business Saturday)
  • You can view participating small businesses by clicking here
  • You can earn three $10 statement credits per card for a total of $30 per card
  • Registration for Small Business Saturday begins on November 16 at 12:00 A.M. MST (“Mountain Standard Time”), and will continue until 11:59 P.M. MST on Nov 29, 2014 unless the registration limit is reached before then
  • Corporate cards and all prepaid cards (apart from Bluebird & Serve) are excluded from this promotion
