Chase Credit Cards: Change of Rules A.K.A. 5/24

Chase is unveiling a new policy in regards to gaming the credit card system. If you’ve opened more than five new credit card accounts in the past 24 months (hence 5/24), you won’t be approved for any new cards from Chase. Currently this rule only applies to Chase Ultimate Reward earning personal cards (e.g Chase Freedom & Chase Sapphire Preferred. We have made mention in previous posts that Chase will soon be extending their 5/24 rule to co-branded  credit cards (e.g. United, BA, ect) sometime in April.

 Chase Bank Credit Cards

Most people that read this blog apply for a lot more than five cards every two years, so this might be your last chance to grab some Chase cards. I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the Chase application rules & best practices, the current best offers for each Chase credit card and the best current offers overall. If there will be a work around that someone will figure out – that can be possible. However there are no workarounds reported as of yet. This is almost as bad as Amex rule allowing credit cards to be opened only once per cardmember.

Chase Application Rules To The Best Of Our Research

Chase will usually approve a maximum of two new credit cards per month. (Some people got three, but this requires a reconsideration call ). An application January 31 and February 1 is not considered 2 months. You will need to wait the full 30 days.

If you’re not instantly approved for a card, WAIT. If you call reconsideration it’s more then likely that you’ll be denied, based on the 5/24 rule. Although it officially hasn’t gone into effect yet the reps are already implementing it. Our advise, and the advise of many other bloggers is to wait it out.

There is a 24 months period from the time you received the sign up bonus to get it again. This is the 24 from the 5/24 rule.

For most people the best option will be to apply for two credit cards in the same day to get the hard pulls combined (keep in mind that you can either do two business or two personal not a mix of the two). If you are not a churner do what you want. However a word of caution, the Tortoise won the race because he was slow and steady – enough said.

Tortoise wins  the race !

#Chase Plans to Steal Your Deposits! Starting March 13, 2016

Today I got a letter from Chase Bank N.A. informing me of their new Deposit agreement. Your deposit ticket mistakes will now cost you!  In short they plan on stealing your money if you make an error on your deposit ticket. I have never heard of any other bank doing such a thing. The only recourse you have is to notify them within 1 year of the deposit. If you do not notify them the extra money becomes property of Chase.

Chase Bank-Armed Robbery

Armed Robbery at a Chase Bank.

Deposit records and receipts Effective March 13, 2016, replace the second paragraph with the following: If you make a deposit, we may provide a receipt, but the amount on your deposit receipt is based entirely on the deposit slip you complete. We may confirm the funds you deposit and, after review, may adjust your account for any errors including any errors on your deposit slip. We are not required to adjust your account for discrepancies of $10 or less. We may not adjust your account unless you notify us of the discrepancy within one year of the date of your account statement that shows the deposit. If you do not notify us of the error during this notice period, the deposit amount will be considered final. This means that if the actual amount deposited was less than the amount declared on the deposit receipt, the difference will become your property and if the actual amount deposited was more than the amount declared on the deposit receipt, the difference will become our property.

Chase Will Impose New Changes on Whom You Can Transfer Points To

Chase has quite a few cards that are part of the Ultimate Reward program. The Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred®, Ink Bold®, Ink Plus®, Chase Corporate Flex CardSM, J.P. Morgan Palladium Card and J.P. Morgan Select Card. All these cards earn “Ultimate Reward” points for purchases. Chase has implemented a new rule today that changes the way you can redeem the points.

The old system

In Chase’s old interface, redeeming points was a breeze for transferring between two ultimate rewards accounts, all you needed to do was enter in a credit card number, a last name and you were able too combined the accounts. The program always forbade transferring points to a non-spouse or household member, but it was never enforced.

Transferring points was to a “Spouse”, although it was never enforced.

Then the system was updated to the previous system. This system while transferring points in essence work the same, there was a check box that asked you to confirm that you are transferring to a spouse/domestic partner.
All this is now a thing of the past. Chase has now unveiled the new interface which makes transferring points To someone that is not a spouse/domestic partner unavailable.

First Class Traveler

The new system

Chase ultimate rewards redemption system rules say: In order to transfer points to a business co-owner or to one additional household member that person must be an authorized user on that credit card account .
The only current work around with Chase is business cards can have multiple Authorized users. However the is no perfect way in transfers  yet as every time I tried transferring in the last two days the system has been down. Oh, well let’s see what happens when the system is working again.
American Express did a similar thing back a year ago in June 2014. Although speculation has it that Amex wanted to streamline the process by having the Account information already in the system. Chase on the other hand is doing this solely to deter miles transferred to non self/spouse.
