30% Bonus on Amex Membership Reward Transfers to Etihad Through June 15: Fly To Israel for 26,000 Points!

American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 30% bonus on transfers to Etihad Guest through June 15. American Express only added Etihad as a transfer partner two weeks ago so it’s great to see them bonusing transfers. They are probably trying to boost this partner so they are offering this promotion. In the past we have seen promotions on other partners like british Airways and El Al.

That means the points from your Amex Everyday Preferred, Premier Rewards Gold, Business Gold, Business Platinum and other Membership Rewards earning cards carry more weight. One third times more weight!

Etihad has a very good first and business class product, and because availability has been generally excellent. Now to be sure the single best first class product in the sky — the Etihad First Apartment, which is scheduled for Abu Dhabi – New York JFK< London, Sydney, Melbourne, and Mumbai — can be tough to get.

Availability goes in cycles (and for awhile has been much easier to get Abu Dhabi – US than US – Abu Dhabi). I’ve flown it several times this year on the New York JFK – Abu Dhabi route but availability for that flight isn’t a gimme.

Nonetheless, Etihad offers first class service with other aircraft to New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Washington Dulles. They offer service that features business class as the top cabin to Chicago and Toronto.

Award prices aren’t cheap. For instance,

  • New York JFK – Abu Dhabi first class is 117,560 miles one-way
  • London – Abu Dhabi first class is 87,732 miles one-way

Business class is somewhat cheaper, for instance 88,391 one-way for New York – Abu Dhabi.

Etihad also adds surcharges to awards: $50 per segment for economy, $100 per segment for business, and $150 per segment for first class.

Etihad has several airline partners, which have to be booked by phone. Etihad agents are often unfamiliar with their partners, and with how to book them.

What’s more, the cost of awards on partner airlines can be high. Nonetheless, they can also be strategically useful. For instance, Etihad partners with Philippine Airlines and they almost always have business class award space between the US and Asia. And they partner with American. Etihad partners with carriers like Virgin Australia, Royal Air Maroc, Garuda Indonesia, Oman Air, and Hainan Airlines as well as a variety of others.

Partner award charts can be found here and are much more lucrative, but partner awards are not bookable online, which means you have to play call center roulette. You also need to book partner awards 14 days in advance.

Every airline has their own award chart. For example:

The Brussels award chart can be found here.

There are no fuel surcharges.

-You can fly from JFK-Brussels in coach for 21,972 miles or about or about 16,902 AMEX points round-trip.
-You can fly from JFK-Brussels in business for 36,620 miles or about or about 28,169 AMEX points round-trip.
-You can fly from Brussels-Tel Aviv in coach for 12,096 miles or about or about 9,304 AMEX points round-trip.
-You can fly from Brussels-Tel Aviv in business for 20,160 miles or about or about 15,508 AMEX points round-trip.

To summarize that is 26,206 points to fly round trip JFK-BRU-TLV in coach or 43,677 miles to fly in business. Judging a normal business class ticket to Israel would run you around $6,000 this is a $.13 redemption per mile. That is ten times the normal redemption.

Chase Credit Cards: Change of Rules A.K.A. 5/24

Chase is unveiling a new policy in regards to gaming the credit card system. If you’ve opened more than five new credit card accounts in the past 24 months (hence 5/24), you won’t be approved for any new cards from Chase. Currently this rule only applies to Chase Ultimate Reward earning personal cards (e.g Chase Freedom & Chase Sapphire Preferred. We have made mention in previous posts that Chase will soon be extending their 5/24 rule to co-branded  credit cards (e.g. United, BA, ect) sometime in April.

 Chase Bank Credit Cards

Most people that read this blog apply for a lot more than five cards every two years, so this might be your last chance to grab some Chase cards. I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the Chase application rules & best practices, the current best offers for each Chase credit card and the best current offers overall. If there will be a work around that someone will figure out – that can be possible. However there are no workarounds reported as of yet. This is almost as bad as Amex rule allowing credit cards to be opened only once per cardmember.

Chase Application Rules To The Best Of Our Research

Chase will usually approve a maximum of two new credit cards per month. (Some people got three, but this requires a reconsideration call ). An application January 31 and February 1 is not considered 2 months. You will need to wait the full 30 days.

If you’re not instantly approved for a card, WAIT. If you call reconsideration it’s more then likely that you’ll be denied, based on the 5/24 rule. Although it officially hasn’t gone into effect yet the reps are already implementing it. Our advise, and the advise of many other bloggers is to wait it out.

There is a 24 months period from the time you received the sign up bonus to get it again. This is the 24 from the 5/24 rule.

For most people the best option will be to apply for two credit cards in the same day to get the hard pulls combined (keep in mind that you can either do two business or two personal not a mix of the two). If you are not a churner do what you want. However a word of caution, the Tortoise won the race because he was slow and steady – enough said.

Tortoise wins  the race !

Reinstate Expired United Airline Miles

There is a way to reinstate miles that expired with united airlines. It is actually very simple but not so talked about on the World Wide Web. Follow these simple and easy steps to reinstate your miles.

If you credit and Hertz rental to your UA frequent flyer account number you can get a small mileage credit for your rental. ‎Anyone’s rental can be credited to anyone’s Frequent flyer account. The rental company does not verify if your name matches on the rental and the FF account. (Avis stopped working in November of 2014).

How to do it?

  • You need to call Avis with you Renter Agreement Number.
  • Tell them you want them to credit the miles to your United Account # XX123456
  • Wait for the miles to post
  • Call united and have them reinstate the account as the miles posted were based off a date prior to the date that your miles expired.

The best part about this is the names don’t need to match. If your friend/grandmother or neighbor has a rental before your miles expired you are in luck!

Open a United branded credit card. If you hold any credit card that says United on the front, your miles will not expire so long as the account is open. The United MileagePlus® Explorer Card is the entry level card, with no annual fee the first year, and a $95 fee after that.  It also waives the first checked bag fee.

Enroll in e-miles. This is a program that lets you complete surveys and earn a small number of miles. It offers a 100 point bonus the first time you sign up, and this counts to reset the clock of your mileage expiration.

Shop at one of the MileagePlus® online retail partners. If you’re making a purchase online, go to the United Mileage Plus portal first for a link to your favorite store.  You can earn United miles on the purchases. You don’t need a United credit card to do this. A cheap purchase can be an iTunes song for $0.99.

Enroll in and use MileagePlus® Dining. You can earn miles when using any credit card you link to your account and dining at restaurants in the MileagePlus® dining program. These miles post pretty quicklyusually within a month of the dining purchase.

Donate 500 or more miles to charity. An easy way to reset the clock instantly is to donate miles to charity. You can do it for as little as 500 miles, and you’re doing something good in the process. It’s a great option when you’re almost out of time.

Did these work for you? Let us know in the comments.
